Overview of the Calculator Function
You will be able to access the Calculators function on the left side of most pages in WRMD, including nearly all of the pages that open through the Quick Links tabs as well as on Patient Records.
There are four simple calculators you can use.
- Regular Calculator: for everyday calculation.
- Kcal Calculator: to determine kilocalorie requirements for your patients. This calculator uses the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council’s (IWRC) kcal calculator formula.
- Fluid Calculator: to determine fluid requirements for your patients.
- Medication Dose Calculator: A simple calculator that helps you to calculate the volume to give on each dose for the prescription that the veterinarian has assigned.
Using the Regular Calculator Function
Step 1
Go to the Calculator tab on the left menu panel. Click on the Regular Calculator button.
Step 2
When the calculator opens, click on the buttons to perform your calculation.
Step 3
To close the calculator, click the X in the upper left corner.
Using the Kcal Calculator Function
Step 1
Go to the Calculator tab on the left menu panel. Click on the Kcal Calculator button.
Step 2
When the calculator opens, type in the weight of the animal and choose the units you used from the drop-down menu.
Step 3
Choose the Taxonomic Constant from the drop-down menu.
Step 4
Choose the Physiological Factor from the drop-down menu.
Step 5
To close the calculator, click the X in the upper left corner.
Now you have the information to determine the volume or quantity of actual food the animal should be getting.
Using the Fluid Calculator Function
Step 1
Go to the Calculator tab on the left menu panel. Click on the Fluid Calculator button.
Step 2
When the calculator opens, type in the weight of the animal and choose the units you used from the drop-down menu.
Step 3
Type in the percent the animal is dehydrated. Consult with your veterinarian about how to determine this.
Step 4
Type in the maintenance rate. This number is defined by the animal type. Consult with your veterinarian on the appropriate maintenance rate for the animal you are calculating for.
Step 5
Type in the ongoing fluid loss of your patient. This number changes depending on how ill your patient is. Consult with your veterinarian to make a reasonable guess as to how many milliliters the animal is losing in fluids within 24 hours.
Step 6
How you give fluids to an animal is entirely independent of this calculator; however, if you are using injection or infusion, this calculator can help you to determine the drip-rate. Just type in how much time the animal will be infused for and how many drops per milliliter the drip set is set for.
Step 7
Click on the green Calculate button.
Step 8
To close the calculator, click the X in the upper left corner.
Using the Medication Dose Calculator Function

Step 4
Click on the green Calculate button.
Step 5
This calculator uses the simple and standard formula for medical dosage calculations. After clicking the button, the Volume of medication to give your patient will appear.
Step 6
