Prescription Formulary

In this tutorial, you will learn how to use a Prescription Formulary to create prescriptions for patients much faster and more accurately among all your staff and volunteers.

About the Prescriptions Formulary

A Prescriptions Formulary is a list of prescriptions that you typically use to treat your common wildlife problems. When you create prescriptions for specific needs and store them in the Formulary, you have a bank of specific prescriptions you can draw from when treating your patients.

Creating Your Prescription Formulary

Step 1

Visit https://www.wrmd.org/signin and log into your account using the username and password that you registered with.

Step 2

Click on the Prescription Formulary link in the Extensions Panel.

Step 3

Click on the green Plus icon to add a formula to the formulary.

Step 4

Give the formula a name. The name should be written in a way that makes sense to you and is easy for you to identify what the formula does and when to use it. For instance, the name could be descriptive of the problem such as “Caught by Cat Songbirds” or it could describe the actual prescription such as “15 mg/kg Baytril for Birds”.

Step 5

Fill in the blanks for any of the default values that you want to be automatically assigned into our prescription, the most important being the Drug/MedicationConcentration, and Dosage.

  • Drug/Medication
  • Concentration
  • Dosage
  • Dose
  • Duration in Days
  • Loading Dose
  • Route
  • Frequency
  • Controlled Substance
  • Instructions

While it is possible to automatically assign the Dose, it is more likely that you would want to calculate the dose based on the animal’s current weight. In this case, leave the dose field blank and check the box to tell WRMD to auto-calculate dose based on the animal’s most recent weight. In this way, WRMD will draw from the Body Weight field on the patient’s record to determine the dose.

Step 5

Once you have the prescription the way you want it, click the green Add New Formula button.

Using Your Prescription Formulary

Step 1

Open the Patient Record of the animal that you want to focus on.

In the Add a New Prescription window, type in your prescription.

You can write any prescription manually. However, when the Prescription Formulary Extension is activated, if you type something in the Drug/Medication field that matches one of the formulas you have entered into the formulary, WRMD will auto-suggest the formula using the name you provided. By selecting the formula, you need, the values will be automatically filled in.

Note that if you checked off Auto-calculate dose based on recent weight on the Formulary then on the Patient Record included the animal’s weight in the Body Weight field, the dose will be automatically filled in as well.
